NEW UNIT! Macbeth

Komninos Zervos is a Greek poet who was born in Melbourne in 1950. All of his writing contains snippets of his own experience. Remember that the Greek community in 1950s Melbourne were considered a minority. They were among the first immigrants to Australia who were not Western European and did not fit the "White Australia" agenda. Although Zervos' family arrived in Australia in 1905 and would have been proficient English speakers (as owners of a fish and chip shop) the family would have faced a significant level of isolation and racism. Despite this, we will see that Zervos does not condemn a narrow-minded Australian society but takes a very multicultural outlook on the state of his society.
We will be looking at three of Zervos' poems, chosen because
a) They are not the Zervos poems that are on the current HSC prescribed text list.
b) They speak to experiences many of you will be able to relate to.

The poems are:

  • At Christmas
  • Drunken Derelict
  • Consumer Rap

It is important that you approach this unit knowing that we are going to analyse and annotate the poems and you will be writing an extended piece based on the poems we study. However, the unit is not without its entertainment. You haven't heard rap until you've heard a 60-year old Greek guy perform Consumer Rap. We will be doing some performance poetry and some digital re-mixing of static poetry. Zervos is a great believer in up and coming hypermedia. He writes poetry that you are supposed to understand.
